The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato has commended the dynamic operation of the BMA environmental health officials who made a major drug discovery yesterday at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) Cargo terminal.
8.1kg Rohypnol was detected concealed in a consignment of dried fish. Rohypnol is commonly known as the “date rape” drug.
In South Africa, Rohypnol is classified as a Schedule 6 drug. The joint operation comprising of BMA officials, South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAPHRA) uncovered the consignment which arrived in a flight from the Republic of Nigeria.
A case is being registered with the SAPS. The Border Management Authority is committed to maintaining border law enforcement with strict control measures in place to detect and prevent illegal activities.
